Back-to-School Cleaning Tips

The mad rush for back-to-school has begun! Now is the time to get the routine down and your home organized, with everything in place.

When kids start back to school, they bring home papers, books, dirty clothes, coats, bags, dirty shoes and more. It’s important to keep things organized or the “homework gets lost” and the dog might get blamed!

The other thing that kids bring home from school is germs! By staying organized and putting everything in its place when they get home, the germs will hopefully stay contained in one area. (We can only hope!)

Shoes: When kids get home, have them take off their shoes in the garage, at the door, or in the mudroom. Leave them there until the next day. It makes it easy to keep dirt off the floor if the shoes are in one place, and it makes it faster to find their shoes the next morning.

Backpacks/Gym Bags: All the kid’s backpacks need to have one destination. They need to take it straight to their room to do the homework later, or leave it by their shoes so they won’t forget to grab it in the morning.

Papers: When they get home from school is a good time to ask for their papers. If you can’t get to it right away, then be sure to ask for the papers during homework time.

Books: Books need to stay in the same space where the backpacks are. If they do their homework in their room, the bookbags need to be in the same place at all times, so that nothing is forgotten in the morning. Wherever the books go, the entire bookbag needs to follow.

Pens/Pencils/Crayons/Markers: There are so many writing utensils for school and for special projects. We recommend keeping a large basket of these items, so that they stay together, but use gallon storage bags for the colored pencils, crayons, and markers to keep them separated.

Craft Supplies: If you have young children in elementary school or middle school, we suggest keeping the craft supplies in a rolling cart that can be moved from room to room. When they are done using it, they can roll it away and store it in the closet. A rolling cart will be really handy to store (or hide) the craft supplies, which can get messy!

Sports Clothing: The clothes from sporting events and practices can get out of hand! There are so many pieces that go with a uniform. We suggest that they change out of their dirty uniform in the bathroom, where they will shower before bed. All of the clothing items will be together in one place (and not scattered all over the home) and that makes it easy to scoop up and wash before the next game.

Sports Items: the sports items need to be brought inside to the garage, or stay in the car for eth next trip. Often times kids will forget to take their sports items and accessories (glove, hat, pads, etc.) This seems to be the worst part of getting them to the game or practice, is running down all the things they are supposed to bring! Designate a place for everything from day one, and don’t change it. Everyone in the family needs to know that spot that you store it in, and enlist the younger kids to help you remember.

House Cleaning: When kids go back to school, back to sports and music lessons, and back to a busy social life, the house can get messy, fast. Basic house cleaning tends to get forgotten and they will build up.
